The inaugural R2 million Lanzerac Ready to Run Stakes presented by Cape Thoroughbred Sales (CTS) took place at Kenilworth Racecourse on 23 November 2013, with eligible top racers purchased at the 2013 CTS Ready to Run Sale, going to post.

Celebrities Nandi Mngoma, Siv Ngesi, Lee-Anne Summers, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Katlego Maboe and Cindy Nel were amongst an enthusiastic and diverse crowd treated to Lanzerac’s very special brand of hospitality. “This day was a great representation of the beautiful country we live in,” said Ngesi, a popular South African actor and comedian.

Victory in the big showdown went to hugely talented, if headstrong, Captain America, who wore down the hot favourite Red Ray after a spirited tussle, with long-shot Davyana far back in third place. The form of that inaugural running has been franked with Captain America scoring in the Grade 1 HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes in March 2015, whilst Red Ray subsequently twice finished laudable seconds in Grade 1 sprints in South Africa behind older rivals.

In the 2014 vintage of the Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes presented by CTS, nimble-footed Zambezi River jinked his way through the field to nail imposing foe Brutal Force. It was a valiant try from a wide draw by Brutal Force, and roles were to be reversed two months later in another CTS Thoroughbreds Stakes race over 1200. In that epic duel, Brutal Force prevailed by a slim margin over Zambezi River to capture the R1 million rand incentive.

The 2015 event was a tremendous race and a sophisticated gathering, where guests savoured Lanzerac’s fine cuisine and quality wines, whilst fans enjoyed the exciting spectacle of magnificent thoroughbreds giving it their all on the Kenilworth track. Prize money was boosted up to a value of R2.5 million, so there is even more at stake to potentially enrich winning connections!

The 2016 Lanzerac Ready to Run Stakes was filled with much excitement and merriment, with guests watching the track with great anticipation. New friendships were formed on this balmy summer day at the races, where guests sipped on G&T’s and chatted away about the hospitality of the day. Colourful outfits complemented the array of beautiful flowers which filled the marquee, and smiles and laughter were certainly the tone of the day.
